Tip Sheet for Participants in the Day of the Digital Audio Book
- Text Chatting
- The text chat input box is located in the left center area of the screen.
- Move your cursor into the box. (keystroke alternative: simultaneously press the Alt and T keys on your keyboard)
- Type your message.
- Press the Enter/Return key on your keyboard.
- By default, your message will go to everyone in the room.
- Private Text Chatting
- It is possible to send a private text chat message to another individual in the online room.
- In the lower left area of the screen, right click on the name of the person to whom you want to send a private text message.
- Choose the option to send a text message.
- Type your message into the input box and press Enter.
- Note: At the top of the text chat display area in the upper left area of your screen, a new tab will open for the private text chat conversation.
- Hint: If you have a private text chat conversation going, when a new private text chat message comes in, you may hear a sound from your computer.
- Caution: Occasionally people attending online events inadvertently send what they intended to be a private text chat message to everyone in the room.
- To close a private text chat conversation, right click on the tab for that conversation, then choose the option to close it.
- Speaking Using Voice-over-IP (VoIP)
- To speak in the room, you need to have a microphone connected to (or embedded in) your computer.
- Press and hold the Control key on your keyboard to speak. (Alternative method: Left click on the microphone icon in the lower left corner of the screen.)
- A turquoise speaker bubble should appear to the left of your name. If there is a numeral inside the bubble, you are in the queue to speak. Wait until your speaker bubble is blank before you begin speaking.
- When you have finished speaking, either let up on the Control key or click on the microphone icon in the lower left corner. This will free up the audio connection so someone else can speak.
- Questions and General Discussion
- During each online session of the Day of the Digital Audio Book we will periodically pause for questions and comments from the participants.
- If you want to submit your questions and comments as you think of them, feel free to type them into the text chat input box. We will address as many as possible during the scheduled Q&A periods.
- A follow-up online discussion to the Day of the Digital Audio Book is being planned. Details will be announced during each session.
- Tech Support
- If you experience any technical problems or have procedural questions during any of the Day of the Digital Audio Book online sessions,
please send a private text chat message to the “Tech Support” person in the room.
- If the server inadvertently bumps you from the room and returns you to the room entry page, simply re-type your name and press Enter.
- Recordings of the Day of the Digital Audio Book Sessions
- Recordings of each session will be made and placed in the OPAL Archive (http://www.opal-online.org/archive.htm) under the “Special Events, Workshops, and Conferences” category.
- Each recording will include an audiorecording, all of the public text chat, and all of the webpages visited during each session.
- Each audiorecording also will be available as a separate file for downloading. It also will be podcast (http://opalpodcast.blogspot.com/).
- If you wish, you also may make your own recording of one or more of these sessions:
- You need to have Windows Media Player (version 9 or higher) loaded on your computer.
- Click on the “File” dropdown menu in the upper left corner.
- Select the option to “Record Presentation.”
- A “Save As” dialogue box will open on your screen.
- Enter a file name for your recording. Don’t add a file extension. They will be added automatically. Press the Save button.
- A “recording” reminder will appear in the lower right corner of your screen.
- If you want to pause your recording at any time, simultaneously press the Alt and P keys on your keyboard. The “recording” reminder will change to “paused”. To unpause your recording, simultaneously press the Alt and P keys again.
- When you have finished recording, select the “File” dropdown menu again in the upper left corner and select “Record Presentation” again. (Alternative Method: Any time you leave the online room, your recording will be stopped.)
- Your recording will consist of two files. A small HTML file will contain the text chat and URLs for the webpages visited. A large WMA file will contain the audiorecording of the session you recorded. If both files are sitting in the same directory on your hard drive or server, if you point your browser to the HTML file you will experience “full” playback: streaming audio, text chat, and webpages will appear just as they did during the live online session.
