Playback venues

TechnologyYou will also want to consider what playback venues are allowed (e.g., on a computer, on a portable playback device, burn to CD)

Computer

Most vendors do allow playback on a computer. The user can “stream” the audio and listen or download the content to the computer and listen at any time.  At this time, Tumblebooks have to be “streamed” and do not have any download capability.

CD

Some vendors actually allow consumers to burn content to CD.  Watch this though: some publishers working with a vendor specifically prohibit burning to CD.  We have not seen many users burning to CD because it requires so many CDs.

Portable playback devices

What kinds of portable playback devices can the content be transferred to? NetLibrary and OverDrive content must be transferred to a device which will play Windows Media Audio (WMA files).

IPod does not play WMA files, but there are over 500 other devices that do.  Audible.com content works on a number of different players but the devices have to be “Audible-ready.”

NOTE: You can find a list of compatible devices on the Audible.com website.
