Ownership of listening devices

Boy with ipodYou will also want to determine if  your library  wants to purchase listening devices to loan out to patrons who do not have them? Consider the following questions:

  • Will staff be loading the devices? Does your staff have time to do this?
  • Can you afford to purchase devices to lend out?
  • Will the vendor allow downloading in the library or only away from the library?  Some vendors do not allow downloading in the library. Some are working on downloading stations so libraries can offer a station for people who don’t have a computer at home.

Most vendors do not care whether a reader listens on a library device or their own device. However, an example where this has been a problem is that some libraries circulating Audible.com content were just circulating content on library devices.

When some users enjoyed the service and purchased devices of their own, Audible.com asked that some libraries quit circulating content on patron devices or they would not be able to circulate that content.
